Twined strings
"A wreathed string, such as are in the bass strings of bandoras, giveth also a purling sound ... rather an increase of sweetness." — Francis Bacon, 1627

Twined strings were the historical equivalent of wound strings before the latter were invented. We know with certainty that they were used on instruments such as the orpharion, cittern, and clavichord, as well as other wire-strung instruments.
Each string is made to order using the most suitable material for the instrument and repertoire, including brass, red brass and silver. Gauge and tension are calculated according to your instrument's string length and tuning to achieve the best possible balance of resonance, response, and feel.
Individual strings and complete sets are available.
For orders or enquiries, please get in touch with your instrument type, scale length, and tuning.
